Day 8-10: Pain, Tears, and Unplanned Zeros
Ditte's journey along the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) took an unexpected turn on Day 8, marked by physical pain and emotional tears. The couple had planned to hike from mile 84.7 to the water source at mile 101.3, but Ditte's blisters, exacerbated by her shoes being too big, caused significant discomfort. Despite following advice from Blaze Physio, her right hip, knee, and shoulder pain intensified, forcing them to abandon their trail again.
The realization that her shoes were the culprit was a difficult one, triggering feelings of guilt and disappointment. Ditte feared that her decision would slow down their progress and potentially cost them extra expenses. The emotional toll was evident as she cried during the 17 painful miles they managed to hike before noon on Day 8, even at the 100-mile marker, a significant milestone.
The couple sought help from Kamisha, a kind trail angel, who offered accommodation assistance and transportation. They ended up spending three unplanned zeroes in Julian, allowing Ditte's feet to heal while waiting for her new shoes to arrive. The experience, while challenging, brought them closer to the trail community, and they expressed gratitude for the support and kindness they received from fellow hikers, friends, and strangers alike.
Ditte and Benjamin's journey, documented on their blog 'Chasing Endless Horizons,' showcases their passion for travel, life, and the outdoors. Their decision to thru-hike the PCT is a testament to their adventurous spirit, and they invite readers to join them on their journey, sharing their raw and real experiences along the way.
